For the last eight years, Republicans and Conservatives alike have been telling anyone that would listen that the left was a bunch of sore losers, not for protesting the Bush Presidency, but how they went about it. The burning effigy of President Bush, the comparisons to Hitler, the hateful blogs, etc, etc. Furthermore, it was applauded by leaders on the left as artistic expression and freedom of speech, it was lauded. As a moderate conservative, I always found the hate that liberals displayed to be distasteful and just ignorant, I also thought that if they would just be civil, like most conservatives act, maybe we could all just get along.

Then our new President was elected. I think a lot of conservatives we’re willing to give the new President a chance, his acceptance speech in Grant Park was fantastic, he challenged his base and said we all must sacrifice, he said his administration would be different, transparent, and bi-partisan. Within three months he was 0-3 with those statements. He spent one week talking about bi-partisan support and quickly gave up and he failed to honor his five day waiting period to sign any bill. He was on a short leash with conservatives, right or wrong, that’s the reality of it and as the poll numbers show, he lost what support he did have quickly. In this time the Tea Party protest started, due to the passing of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA of 2009). The protest drew a small collection of folks, they were business owners and entrepreneurs, they saw their business going under and yet we were bailing out others, they were frustrated. They were protesting the involvement of government, and how the new administration was going about dealing with the collapse of our economy and the perceived handouts that some corporations were getting. Lets restate that. Conservatives were protesting handouts to corporations.

This is Ignorant

All of the above facts are good, protest is ok, and peaceful protest is respectable, but acting like a sore loser is not. That’s where I completely disagree with the few making conservatives look, well, liberal in their tactics. Furthermore, the statement of “beating them at their own game” is ignorant! Since when do you want your children see you screaming like a twelve year old that didn’t get their way? How does that further my cause? I don’t like the direction that our Congress and President are taking, but we elected them, and conservatives are half to blame for letting our Senators/Representatives/President run around spending lavishly for the better part of the past eight years. And don’t bother me with the congress being controlled by Democrats for the past four, because I’ll call your BS. We should have been writing in and telling our elected officials to stop with the spending, but we chose not to. Sometime between the budget balancing Republicans of the Clinton era and the beginning of the Bush years those officials decided to scrap being fiscally conservative and start spending liberally.

So let’s stop being sore losers and calling our President names like school children, it advances nothing and only further divides our country. For every 100 respectable protesters, it only takes the one idiot to ruin it. When you see that man or woman, politely ask them to tone it down and the power of the pack can shame a man into submission. If they have signs that seem racist, take them down. Images that portray or reference skin color, imagery, or have any kind of racial undertones are UNACCEPTABLE. If you’re motivation is race driven, you have no right being at a rally dealing with economics, you clearly only communicate on a very basic level, thus economics and policy are way over your head. We are conservatives, we hold ourselves to a higher level of civility and respectability than others (some of us do at least).

We also need to be talking to our leaders and having them tone down the rhetoric and supporting civil discourse, not interrupting it. No one should be patting our buddy from South Carolina on the back, that was embarrassing. Having a little class will make your voice louder, it may not get you on TV, but you know who those folks are, and they only want ratings. They don’t want solutions, they want more division, it drives ratings.

Cut the crying about media too, it’s bias, if you really want to watch the news (an antiquated way of getting news these days) go and watch Fox, it’s 100% conservative and stay the hell away from MSNBC, CNN, etc. All you’re going to do is piss yourself off. Get over it, they are not going to change until there is no money in being biased. Yelling down CNN reporters may be good comedy for conservative blogs, but it’s just another example of childish stupidity. I bet you chastised the DNC when they wouldn’t do a debate on Fox during the election, but now we go and scream at them, yea, that always works.

Cut the sore loser act, and lets go get back some seats in the midterm elections, and lets start acting like adults and expecting that out of our elected officials. Those on our side of the isle and theirs too.

For the 3rd time in less than a year, St. Louis was treated to a biblical type of rainfall. The rain was so loud at 3am that it was impossible to sleep. The thunder and lightning had all the neighbors dogs howling (not Cooper… good boy!) and trees were snapping all over the area. At 3:30 I decided to see if my basement was again filled with sewage… thankfully my new drain plug worked wonders and I was safe. The pictures below… are hard to see, but what I can tell you is that my car was about 15′ away from the street and my sidewalk is at least 20′. Our street had enough water in it that it made it into Jessica’s Jeep.

Who pissed off the Gods… I blame Obama. HA.

Most of you know, my Grandpa Gates passed away a few years back, mostly from the wear and tear on his body from cancer. Ever since I’ve felt compelled to help (in some way) to raise money to help fight this deadly disease. While I’ve only lost one family member to Cancer, we have also dealt with my Grandpa Becker and my dads skin cancer, my cousin Nicole’s , and my cousin Michael having various forms of cancer.
So for the past five years I’ve been on the committee for the American Cancer Society’s annual gala. This year we dumped the old dinner/auction/black tie format for a more festive atmosphere in all we raised over $180,000 for the ACS. I want to thank everyone that donated and gave their time. Every minute we spend working on this disease will bring us that much closer to finding a cure. I also want to thank Brian and Annie for going with us.

Thats all.

Everyone has been asking… so here are the answers to most of your pressing questions…

Q: Aren’t you and Jess getting married or something?

A: Well, yea we are.

Q: Like, when is it going to be? We have other stuff going on, and stuff.

A: Glad you asked, September 18th, 2010. (See what I did there with the bold and underline?)

Q: In St. Louis, right?

A: WRONG, we live here all the time, so we’re taking this party to the Riveria Maya

Q: You’re kidding?

A: Absolutely…. NOT kidding and for those that can’t make it, we’re having a reception back here a few weeks later.

Q: So what about the details? Resort? Cost? Etc.

A: We’re working on that… once the 2010 prices come out for the resorts in September, we will get everything going and let everyone know what the deal is. We know this for sure, it will be in Mexico, it will be at an all inclusive, and we will be having a huge party.

Q: Ok, enough about this wedding stuff… Someone told me you’re moving? Did you buy a home?

A: Damn, who’s your source? Yea, we’re moving in mid July to 8876 Rock Forest Dr. St. Louis MO 63123. We didn’t buy the home, but we will be there for at least a year.

Q: When can we come up?

A: August. We’ve been so busy with wedding planning, moving, birthdays, showers, Gala’s, etc that we’re tapped out right now.

I admit this was a dumb idea, and I blame my fiancee for this, since she NEVER uses our blog.

that’s all.

Sometimes we all cross that line of sensibility. The one that’s so black and white that all you see is gray. I’m not going to sit here and say bad things about Ms. Sykes because of her comments, but I will say she clearly crossed the line of civility. What made this an issue is that people decided to laugh and even worse the President played into it and smiled as well. It’s just not what we need happening in our world today. Her comments are the EXACT opposite of what I expect to be hearing from a woman who is African American and gay. On one side of the coin we say that we shouldn’t belittle anyone for having views in the minority, but it’s ok to publicly call for a mans kidney to fail if you don’t agree with his beliefs? It’s hate mongering of the worst kind, and Mr. President, I’m embarrassed that you chose to laugh at these comments rather than realize that they were uncalled for.

A few weeks back I wrote about stepping away from the Republican Party. My thoughts on the subject are directed only as the direction of the given political party, and how the “leaders” of that party chose to formulate their platform to either a true conservative one or to a radical “Republican” platform. Since then, this topic has been all over the news, from CNN and MSNBC to Fox, everyone is talking about the “death” of the Republican Party and the “seismic shift” of the country to a more liberal mindset.

What I find amazing… is that no “media” outlet besides “fair and balanced ” (ha ha) has picked up or really reported how we came to this wonderful place in history. We are here because our elected officials that said they were “conservatives” were really spending the last eight years spending like a teenage girl with her dads credit card. Is that conservative? Ask dad about his credit card bill and see how he’d fill in this blank with “conservative” or “liberal”: “Oh she was being _________with it”.

I’ll even put aside that for the last two years the congress was ruled by the other party, because aside from the special interest of that party they were loving the projects that were being approved for their home states. It was practically a free for all to which we’ve carried over into the new administration.

That little nugget of fact will go unreported by any “real” news networks. However, our nearly dead newspapers have decided to start picking up a few conservative columns and letting these true conservatives (NOT: Rush Limbaugh, Dick Chaney, Sarah Palin, etc) lay out some logical thoughts and explain where the true conservative party lies and where they should (fingers crossed) be heading.

Our Talking Heads:

Time Magazine : Joe Scarborough - How the Republicans Can Come Back – Is it shocking that the article is posted on Time.com where it’s banner reads “partners with CNN”? Mr. Scarborough discusses the over zealous media attempts to declare the Republican party dead, just like they did to the Democratic Party after Bush won in 2004. He also touches on what being a conservative is suppose to mean and how the Republican party can come home to it’s conservative values.

Wall Street Journal: Colin Powell’s Bad Advice - The WSJ talks about why the GOP shouldn’t heed the advice of Mr. Powell (DUH). Has anyone that considers themselves an ultra liberal or republican ever thought that the majority of Americans might have voted for Obama because they didn’t like how Bush shoved everything down their throat from the war on terror to to his bully approach to foreign policy? Not because they didn’t like his “failed” policies? So now were going to shove more government down our throats because we “want it”? Wait… what?

LA Times – Micky Edwards – The Nation Needs A Better GOP: Mr. Edwards spells out the rough road ahead for the GOP, but also discusses what it was and what the party should be.

The reality of life is that we will always have opposing forces in this country. History has seen the names of these parties change along with their platforms and ideals. As the nation changes so does it political outlook. I for one will always have my conservative fiscal beliefs and my leftest leaning social beliefs. I think I am representative of a majority of the populous and one day my party will better suit my needs. No matter what, don’t let any talking head or radical tell you that you’re wasting your time being a conservative, because they aren’t trusting history, they are just repeating what they heard Wolf Blitzer say. Of course there is nothing wrong with basking in the glory of victory… just look where that arrogance took the Republican Party.

That’s all.

We are at our best when we’re in motion. I belive that and right now Jess and I have been running for the better part of two weeks. Since Jess said ‘Yes’ on April 4th, we’ve started up the process of where we should have our wedding, almost bought a home, started fixing up my home so it’s rentable once we move out, and then found out my other tenant is buying a home, so that work has doubled. That’s on top of our daily work and social schedule. The beauty is that we have NOTHING to complain about, these are all good things, so lets recap the weekend that was.

Friday – Jess went with our agents husband to look at three new homes in mid county. As she told me, they walked in, make a quick look around, and quickly left. This is typical of our home search, it’s amazing what people will put on the market. We’ve seen homes that had foundations that appeared to have a decorative waterfall and a Wet Willy’s slide plasterd onto it, to $20k in damage that the owner “had NO idea about”. People are just dumb. We saw a home in a neighborhood that has a median price of about $250,000 that was left vacant and not winterized by the bank. A pipe suddenly exploded and the whole home needs to be demolished. It’s that bad. Friday was good otherwise, I managed to get a good two hour run in playing basketball and Jess had a chance to relax for a few hours on the porch with some vino while Cooper stood guard in the upper window. Not to mention I had my third treatment for straining my trapezius. On the scale of pain, that’s at about an 8 since you are effectively unable to do anything that requires your arms or your back.
Saturday – Wedding Day. This is what the whole day was going to be about in one form or another. We had lunch scheduled with Jess’s parents and then we were having our first Date Night to celebrate our engagement. The lunch was great as always, Mom (Riggs) always has some good food going out at their home, and if I were able to without putting on 10 pounds, I’d go on Bill’s diet. He has a chocolate shake that is made up of two scoops of full fat vanilla ice cream and whole milk, powered milk and Ovaltean, WOW. We all sat around and discussed the Engagement Party and then Jess and her mom talked Weddings while Bill and I talked over the economy.

We then prepared for our date night. I told Jess we were going to a newer establishment in Maplewood called Maya. they were featured in the latest Alive Magazine along with their Cuban Pork, which… oh baby is it good. Go and try it, now. We had a nice dinner and even found a way to talk about things other than buying a home and weddings. We then strolled up to Monarch for an after dinner drink and just enjoyed one anothers company for the evening. It was a perfect date for the two of us, hey… I love her, go figure.

Sunday – I think we left our bed around 11am. That would lead you to belive it would be a lazy day, but once we started moving, I started working on priming and painting the bathroom closet door and Jess started cleaning the house. My workload included sanding down window sills, patching them, and then repainting doors. Why all the work? In anticipation that ONE DAY… we’ll find a new home. Speaking of homes, we went down to Maplewood to look at two homes. The frist one ended up being across the street from a huge metal storage facility, very nice home, but… there was no way I was going to live next to a big red metal building, and the second, we were un(lucky) enough to come by while the owners were still there. AWKWARD. The owner says, don’t worry about the dog, he’s nice. Then our agent says to the man, I hope that cast on your arm isn’t from the dog! (as a joke) The man says, oh it is, but we took that one to the Humane Society. OK… bad start. That home was a shot out of the 70’s. I’m not wasting any more time on that.
What a weekend.
